Colloquial Malay Notes

  1. Family terms such as ‘abang’ and ‘kakak’ are very commonly used to address strangers in a friendly way. We never say ‘you’ directly to a stranger, especially to an older person.
  2. ‘Abang’ or ‘bang’ and ‘kakak’ or ‘kak’ can be used when addressing a person who you think is slightly older than you.
  3. Use ‘adik’ or ‘dik’ when addressing a younger person.
  4. If you are unsure of their being younger or older than you are, just pick any one.
  5. For a much older person, use ‘makcik’ or ‘pakcik’. For a very old person, use ‘atuk’ or ‘tok, or ‘nenek or ‘nek’.
